Theatre Maskaron, Teplice
The history of the theatre in Teplice has always correlated with the spa. The first theatre in Teplice was set up in the half of the 18th century in the castle by its founder František Václav Clary Aldringen. Soon afterwards the theatre with 285 seats turned out to be too small to house audiences that were so fond of art. For this reason, the summer theatre in Trnovan Park was founded in the half of the 19th century. The proposal to build a new town theatre in Teplice was first presented in 1861 and it brought about a discussion about where to build it and what it should be like. In 1871 a decision was made: the place where the today’s theatre stands was chosen. The new theatre had the capacity to house 815 sitting audiences and 185 standing audiences. At first, the theatre was run by the town itself but later it was rented to theatrical directors. Local inhabitants did not enjoy the building very long though. On September 1, 1919 at night the building burned to the ground. In 1921 a new proposal to build a new theatre in the very same place was passed. The new building was to involve a spacious theatre, spa hall, cinema and large restaurant
