Miami, Florida

Long beaches and glamour

MSC Cruises shore excursions can be a clever option to see Miami. It’s a city of wildly diverse districts, jigsawed into a vast urban corridor from two technically separate cities: mainland Miami and the huge sand bar known as Miami Beach.

If you’re sticking to the most popular areas in Miami Beach and downtown, though, you can zip around easily by bus and on foot. During an MSC cruise in the Caribbean most people spend their time in South Beach, a fairly small area at the southern end of the sand bar, where you’ll find many of Florida’s leading art galleries, trendsetting restaurants, and much of its boisterous club scene.

Heading north, Central Miami Beach was where 1950s screen stars had fun in the sun and helped cement Miami’s international reputation as a glamorous holiday spot. Surprisingly few tourists venture beyond Miami Beach, and so miss out on some of the most enticing parts of the city.

Tucked away in the Miami-Dade Cultural Center are the city’s excellent history and art museums, while Bayside Marketplace is the staging post for boat tours of Miami’s most exclusive offshore keys. To the north sits the city’s buzziest neighbourhood, the strip of land along and around Biscayne Boulevard, known as the Biscayne Corridor; it includes the dazzling Performing Arts Center, the art galleries and showrooms of Wynwood and the Design District, and even the grubby but thrilling immigrant neighbourhood known as Little Haiti.

The first of Miami’s Cubans settled southwest of downtown, just across the Miami River, in Little Havana. This is still one of the most intriguing parts of the city, rich with Latin American looks and sounds, though it’s less solidly Cuban than it used to be.

2 day – a day at sea

  • The opening of the festival.
  • Acquaintance of the teams.
  • Rehearsals / Competition in nominations / Exhibition of works / plein air.
  • Disco.
  • Relaxation. Participation in the evening program.

Day 3 – Ocho Rios (Jamaica)

  • Rehearsals of groups / Competition in nominations /
  • Arrival at the port of Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
  • Excursion (extra charge *). Tours are ordered from the organizers.
  • Flash mob festival. Night on the ship.

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Cruise to Jamaica and discover Ocho Rios means eight rivers in Spanish, and it is precisely its rivers, as well as its crystalline sea, that is its main characteristics; characteristics that will not disappoint visitors to Jamaica wishing to immerse themselves in the lush vegetation of these marvelous dream locations.

Just like a mirage, the white buildings of Ochos Rios seems to appear unexpectedly from lush vegetation covering the coast. On Main Street, you will be able to shop or pass your day on solid ground. However, during your cruise to Jamaica and Caribbean sea, we suggest you try the many outdoor activities offered on its rivers, such as kayaking and tubing. With an excursion, you will be able to admire the Konoko Falls & Gardens: an explosion of tropical plant and animal life with different aromas emanating from sinuously shaped flowers and colorful parrots at every corner. Another must-see attraction are the waterfalls along the Dunn River: almost 650 feet of natural steps over which the water flows to then fall about 200 feet directly into the sea. To enjoy this spectacle to the fullest, these enchanting waterfalls can be climbed via stairs set on either side. The beach below with its extremely fine, pure white sand is equally beautiful. The sea of Ochos Rios will also grant you the opportunity of a close encounter with a very popular sea mammal: the dolphin.

Day 4 – George Town (Cayman Islands)

  • Arrival at George Town Port (Cayman Islands)
  • Excursion (extra charge *).
  • Creative meetings of collectives.
  • Disco. Night on the ship.

George Town, Cayman Islands

Once disembarked from and MSC cruise ship in the Cayman Islands, the cruise goer is welcomed by the port of George Town. The capital of the island and of the country, it is a traditional Caribbean city with colorful wooden houses that alternate with newer buildings.

The houses on the narrow George Town streets are interspersed with artisan workshops, where you can find some rarities to take home as a reminder of your MSC cruise in the Caribbean Sea. You can take a plunge into the history of the island at the dual-purpose National Museum of George Town: you can both explore samples of the most interesting endemic flora and fauna, and trace the long and tough inhabited history of the island.

However, if you want to learn about the lives of the first European colonists, an excursion to Bodden Town located five kilometers from the capital is ideal. In this former capital of Cayman Islands, you can visit the Mission House, a building used as a family residence by teachers and missionaries during the 18th century. As an alternative, visit the Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park located, in the east of the island. Here, if you are lucky, besides the riot of tropical plants you may also encounter the extremely rare blue iguana.

Lovers of shopping will also find great satisfaction in the Cayman Islands: the entire country is duty free. You just have to choose what interests you the most among the myriad of watches, liqueurs, jewelery and porcelain. There is even a museum of curiosities. Not far from Turtle Farm, sits the Cayman Motor Museum, which exhibits the incredible collection by the Norwegian businessman Andreas Ugland. His “pearls” include the original Batmobile and Batcycle from the Batman TV series, a replica of the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen, considered the first car in the world, and another seventy rare cars and motorcycles.

Day 5 – Cozumel, Mexico

  • Arrival at the port of Cozumel, Mexico
  • Excursion (extra charge *).
  • Rehearsals of groups / Participation in evening programs of selected groups / Disco.
  • Night on the ship

Cozumel, Mexico

A forty-kilometre-long island directly off the coast from Playa del Carmen, Isla Cozumel is a renowned cruise-ship call: nearly every day, up to ten cruise ships dock at one of the island’s three dedicated piers, all just south of the only town, San Miguel.

A holiday to Mexico with MSC Cruises will present you with restaurants, souvenir shops and jewellery stores, all along the malecón (Av Rafael Melgar) in downtown San Miguel.

If you fancy a museum, the attractive Museo de la Isla de Cozumel has small displays of the flora, fauna and marine life of the island, as well as a good collection of Maya artefacts and old photos.

If you’re not a diver, there’s a certain appeal in wandering the relaxed inland blocks of San Miguel, away from the piers, spotting Maya ruins and birds (the Maya called the island cuzamil – “land of the swallows”) in the dense forests and being the only person on the windswept eastern beaches.

Midway across the island, San Gervasio is the only excavated Maya site on Cozumel. With several small temples connected by sacbeob, or long white roads, it was one of the many independent city-states that survived the fall of Chichén Itzá, flourishing between 1200 AD and 1650 AD. As part of a larger nature reserve the site is worth a visit for the numerous birds and butterflies you can spot early in the morning or late in the day.

Another place to visit is Xcaret, a surprisingly pleasant theme park: it offers all the Yucatán’s attractions in one handy place, with a museum, a tropical aquarium, a “Maya village”, a beach, some small authentic ruins, pools and more than a kilometre of subterranean rivers down which you can swim, snorkel or float. On the other hand, neighbouring Xplor is dedicated to ziplines and other outdoor adventure.
